Profile

Deirdre Green lives in Nova Scotia. She and her Fiancé, Derek Whiteway, are avid anglers and can most often be found on the rivers in their home province, pursuing native Brook Trout and Atlantic Salmon. They are passionate about our catch and release fishery and protecting surrounding watersheds. Deirdre first began fly fishing and tying in 2015 and has made strong relationships within the angling community since. She actively encourages other would-be anglers, specifically females and youth, to give the sport a try and be patient with themselves and the learning curve. In the off-season, her love affair with fly fishing spills over into her other hobbies. Whether it be writing, fly tying, painting or another art project; Deirdre draws inspiration from the wealth of time she spends on the river. Her passion for fishing and angling community is apparent as she volunteers regularly and eagerly seek out opportunities to share this exciting lifestyle with others.

Fishing season has been delayed for many and as we navigate these challenging times, we are incredibly fortunate to have technology at our fingertips to socialize virtually. Throughout these past months, many of us are getting creative with our use of social media to host fly tying parties and planning sessions for when fishing season […]

In light of recent world events, we are all practicing our social distancing skills to protect ourselves and others. As anglers, we seem to be uniquely equipped, as we regularly seek out places where complete isolation is guaranteed. While spending an increased amount of quiet time at home these past weeks, I have been contemplating […]

Fly tying is a favourite hobby for many, especially during the colder months here in Nova Scotia. As our season runs from April 1 to October 31, the winter months are the perfect time to relive past adventures and plan for the season to come. Gear is cleaned and organized, journal entries updated and fly […]

There is a rich history of fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon in my home province of Nova Scotia. If you visit the East Coast seeking chrome, you will cross paths with many who are 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th generation anglers and conservationists. They have seen the decline of our Atlantic Salmon stocks first hand. […]

What makes up your favourite day of fishing? Can you define it? Is it the number of fish hooked, the secret haunts traveled to or the chance to disconnect? For me, it’s a combination of all three but it’s also about the people. The like-minded anglers who share your passion and excitement; who offer to […]

    December 11, 2019 (December 11, 2019)

Still on Atlantic Standard Time and beyond eager to get my fly in the water, I awoke before my alarm on the first morning at Frontier. Curled up and cozy under the thick fleece sheets, I contemplated what the day may hold. I made a coffee and peeked outside from my private cabin. Everything was […]

  • Tips for planning your first trip to Steelhead Country

    Deirdre Green
    November 25, 2019

Excited and a little uncertain, I boarded a plane for Smithers on November 1st. Although my journey to Frontier Steelhead was not my first solo fishing trip, it was a first for traveling across  the country. Beyond stoked for the adventure but a bit nervous about traveling alone with all my gear and multiple connections, […]

Thirty minutes is all it takes to hike into the untouched plunge pool. At first, you are surrounded by birches, hemlocks, maples, pine and ash trees. Shortly into the walk, a meandering stream and a series of small falls appears. Everything from the quartz veins to the sweet smell of peat makes this journey second […]

  • In Search of Cape Breton Atlantics

    Deirdre Green
    August 9, 2019 (August 9, 2019)

It was October in Cape Breton and the island was bursting with autumnal colour. I was fishing with my fiancé, Derek and two of our good friends, Robert Chiasson and Raymond Plourde. Robert is the top Atlantic Salmon guide in Cape Breton and Ray Plourde, a dedicated conservationist, nature photographer and writer. Derek and I […]

  • Restigouche Salmon – Glen Eden

    Deirdre Green
    July 2, 2019 (July 3, 2019)

This adventure began by tying flies at a local fishing show. I was lucky to meet some incredible artists and fellow anglers there. And by the end of that whirlwind weekend, I found myself invited to visit the Glen Eden Salmon Lodge on the world-renowned Restigouche River.  Like many anglers, I had heard tales of […]
